The No. 19 Pilots Win the 2010 Nike Invitational with a 2-1 Victory over No. 30 Evansville


PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Ryan Luke scored twice and senior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero came up with two clutch saves in the closing minutes as the No. 19 Pilots defeated the No. 30 Evansville Purple Aces 2-1 on the final day of Nike Invitational on Sunday at Merlo Field. The win allows Portland (1-0-1) to claim the tournament title.

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 19 Portland Pilots opened the 2010 season with a 0-0 tie with the Northern Illinois Huskies on the first day of the Nike Invitational on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots (0-0-1) had their chances, out-shooting the Huskies 17-10, but NIU (0-0-1) was able to hold on for the draw.

The 19th-ranked Portland Pilots begin the 2010 season by hosting the annual Nike Invitational this weekend at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Usual participant Washington gets the tourney started by playing the No. 30 Evansville Purple Aces on Friday at 4:30 p.m. UP follows with its season-opener against the Northern Illinois Huskies at 7:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, UW takes on Northern Illinois at 11:00 a.m. before Portland battles Evansville at 1:30 p.m.

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 19 Portland Pilots scored two goals just 34 seconds apart in the first half and added another goal in the second half en route to a 3-1 win over the Oregon State Beavers in an exhibition soccer match at Merlo Field on Wednesday night. Junior transfer Conner Barbaree and freshman Steven Evans both scored their first goal with the Pilots.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- In a wide-open West Coast Conference, the Portland Pilots were picked to finish second, narrowly missing the top spot in the 2010 WCC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll. Seniors Austin Guerrero and Jarad vanSchaik and junior Ryan Kawulok were voted to the WCC’s Preseason All-Conference Team, giving the Pilots a league-high three selections.

The University of Portland and Salem Communications have announced a partnership to broadcast all men’s basketball games and selected soccer games live on True Talk 800 AM (KPDQ) during the 2010-11 season, it was announced on Thursday. PORTLAND, Ore. --- The 19th-ranked Portland Pilots men’s soccer team began its quest to return to the post-season with the first official practice of the 2010 season at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex on Wednesday morning. The Pilots are fresh off a visit to the third round of the 2009 NCAA Playoffs, which was farther than any other West Coast Conference team.
