Panthers Reclaim Milwaukee Cup With Thrilling 4-2 Victory
Junior Ross Van Osdol broke a 1-1 tie with a late second-half goal and freshman Edison Crespo followed with two more scores to send the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Marquette University in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night. Van Osdol broke the deadlock with a 40-yard, 77th-minute strike before Crespo tallied in the 88th and 89th minutes. A late own goal provided the difference in front of a packed crowd of 2,089 at Valley Fields. The Panthers (1-0-0) took control of the game in the second half after the Golden Eagles (0-1-0) tied the game just seconds before intermission. The offensive display - UWM scored four goals in a regular season game for the first time since September of 2006 - gave Chris Whalley a victory in his first game and gives the Panthers possession of the Milwaukee Cup for the first time since a 3-2 win during the 2006 campaign.

Engelmann Turf Project Giving Panther Soccer Big Upgrade
As the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's soccer teams report for preseason practice, dreams of a new playing surface at Engelmann Field are nearly a reality. In fact, renovations are now underway to install a synthetic playing surface at Engelmann, home of the Panther soccer teams. The project started this summer and appears likely to roll into September, meaning some early-season matches will be moved off-campus. But, sacrificing a few matches home matches now is a small price to pay in order to have one of the finest playing surfaces in the country when the renovations are complete. The project, funded largely through donations in a three-year campaign spearheaded by women's coach Michael Moynihan, will also include other upgrades and improvements. Plus, the turf itself will give the Panthers a FIFA Two-Star Field, with the new Polytan playing surface the first of its kind in North America.
Panthers Add Shepherd, Zenoni To Men's Soccer Staff
Ben Shepherd and Kyle Zenoni have been hired as assistant coaches for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team, head coach Chris Whalley announced today. The hiring of the two coaches fills out the staff for Whalley, who was named the sixth head coach in program history in February. Shepherd comes to Milwaukee from NCAA Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. He spent the past five seasons as the assistant coach following a playing career at the same school where he was a four-year starter at defense and midfield and a three-time team captain. Zenoni was a four-year letterwinner (2002-05) on the field for UWM, leading the Panthers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament each season.

The domestic training camp took place in San Jose, Calif. from June 27-July 5, with a total of 24 players representing the youth, college and professional ranks. Saavedra's squad took on the San Jose Earthquakes twice during the camp and also played against two local clubs.
